Windows XP
I had an issue with netframework1.1. I contacted MS Support... but they operate when I not home and I've been doing this through email. They sent me a cleanup tool which removed netframework. They gave me 3 links: 1)netframework1.1 2)Service Pack 1 - KB867460-X86.exe 3)SU for nfw1.1, service pack 1, KB886903.
I can't get #2 installed.
I get an error message:
which changes each time I try it.
After cleaning it all up again. running CCleaner & Ace Util, rebooting & then reinstalling netframework & rebooting - I went to windows update and just 'looked'.
It told me item #2 was already downloaded and ready to be installed, which leads me to the error messag above.
Anybody got any suggestions (other than switch to MAC/Linux/etc)?

oops...didn't know what you wanted it for. You can install the 1.1 with 2.0 installed. Just install the original #1 install (1.1) that MS gave you and try PaintNet. Should work.
Note: your machine will run with
both
installed side-by-side.

Okay, will give it a try - still have the issue with previous item 2 - haven't tried the registry thing yet since I installed the 2.0 - did get a reply from MS support this morn - gave me instructions for checking/allowing permissions. PaintNet didn't work before but that was probably (hoping) due to my ignorance of not reading and understanding I needed to uninstall 1.0 first - don't know, kinda expected an update to replace one with the other automatically. Like SDC does.
so here's my plan:
Leave 2.0
install 1.1 (item 1}
try the permissions thing, if fails then the registry thing to get the update installed (item 2} - I do try to leave registry alone - I may be Troll but I know most of my limitations (usually
}
then try to install the update to the update. {item 3}
Onward through the fog!

1.1 installed
KB867460 installed
The permission thing worked - i didn't use your registry link Yrag, but not to worry - every time you post a link I bookmark that puppy
On to restart and item 3

Watch yourself....that error may be caused by the KB886903 install. That update
does not have
to be installed

crap!
Can't take it out either huh?
aw righty then... i'll leave all alone for a while.. besides, me thinks it may have something to do with earthlinks toolbar. I mainly use firefox and a lot of time if I use IE then close it I get that message and then my EL tray icons disappear.
So, I'll just hang (and keep an eye on that sneaky account that keeps getting created - since I'm don't know what it's for or if I'll ever need it I shall forego my natural tendency to seek and destroy at this time).
Thanks Yrag!

KB886903 can be removed in Add and Remove Programs listed under
Microsoft NET Framework
.

This is the 1.1 file you installed, correct? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en
That's what I thought you installed and why I said to try Paint first before you installed the updates. That last update (903) is particularly evil on some systems. That toolbar and/or FF shouldn't be related to this install....but, as in all things cyber......who the hell knows..
That user account 1.1 threw in is harmless and you can leave it with no worries. The 2.0 net is installed separately and will never be used unless a program requires it (auto pilot sort of thing). Some of Stardock's apps already use it so you're ahead of the curve....

found it!
I was thinking it was one of those that on WU tell you: once this has been installed..bwah ha ha.
i looked in add/remove but scrolled too fast and ended up down at windows hotfixes where naturally i didn't find it.
I will file for future reference. I'm through deleting stuff for the day
You sir, are a most appreciated source of information and help.
Now - take a break and go outside for a while.
